Apple Picking

Eric and I went apple picking recently, it was amazing. I don't think I've ever had apples that good. That night I made apple pie, my first but not my last.
Lots of painting has been going on. Right now I'm working on the sheep in the field painting as well as a still life. But I'm not happy with these trees ( see below ) so they are going and then getting repainted. First, however the silly thing has to dry!

Oils

I'm starting to work with oils again, after a break of a few years mostly due to space and time restrictions. This is a section of a large painting that I'm working on right now. In some ways oils are really satisfying to work with, don't get me wrong I love watercolors but they are not as rich in texture. Perhaps I will do some still-lifes with them. Not sure what other artists feel about painting in oil vs. watercolor, but for me its more relaxing to paint in oil because of the mediums slower pace (very slow drying time) and I feel like my mistakes are easily covered over. Well back to painting! Hope I can share the finished piece with you soon.

On Beauty

It is difficult to explain how to capture beauty on a canvas or in a photograph. My eye knows it, by the firm fitting together of all the components. My heart brims over when I see it. There is a stillness in these captured moments which little else can match. I've heard it argued that the artist is a teacher, teaching others how to see the beautiful. This seems to me to be true, but I also think that the artist is learning day by day to see beauty anew. The artist needs to be able to see what is beautiful and (this perhaps is the most difficult) take hold of it within his own work.

Fairy Circle

I love little mushrooms and it is especially enchanting to see a fairy circle, or rather a ring of mushrooms, growing in the woods. While I'm not quite sure what mad drive possessed me during the making of this little picture, it was a rather productive day. I not only finished the painting but also made a little twig frame to go along with it. It has a very rustic feel to it.

I may be posting this on etsy in a few days, still assessing the solidity of the frame. It is after all made of twigs with a cardboard backing. But if someone simply must have it now just email me and we can work it out.

Autumnal Mountain Range

A large, mood painting I did recently, there seem to be a several mini paintings within it (I personally love when that happens). It is a painting of the oncoming fall and I suppose also of the oncoming night. Since it is a mountain range at sunset.

Painting the Days

Time passes so quickly, it seems like I'm constantly working on a new project these days. Recently I've joined etsy and will be selling some smaller pieces there. If you follow the link to the right of your screen you should have no problem finding my store there. No worries though I'm not abandoning this website.
The painting above is of one of those winged seeds, which seem be constantly twirling outside my window. I've always had plans to paint one, but until now I have not gotten around to it. It has some similarities to The Cabbage that I painted earlier this summer, which I really like. Perhaps I will save it for my show in August.
Other than painting I've been knitting a bit more and discovered a lovely yarn shop in the area. I saw pumpkins at the store today, and bought two on impulse. Then proceeded to make my very first pumpkin pie.

Autumn's Nest

Drawing little birds has always been a hobby of mine. Morning doves are one of my favorite little birds, the sound they make is just so hauntingly pretty. Also its starting to smell like fall around hear, and that always excites me to no end. Hence this little painting was born.
