Squirrel
This is a copy of Durer's "Two Squirrels, One Eating a Hazelnut". I focused in on the one eating the hazelnut. It was interesting doing this one in watercolor because it is very much a textured piece, but I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out.

Fallen Peony
I'm afraid its the end of the peony season around my garden, but these flowers are stunning even when they have fallen to the ground. I think they look like a lady's (slightly crumpled) silk ball gown when they reach this stage.

The Poppy
The Poppy was based on a photo that I took after a heavy rain, while I was walking in my garden. The woods in the back looked like a mist and I tried to represent that in the painting. The actual flower was a much brighter pink (if you can believe it).

Cherries and a Lemon
This piece was very satisfying to work on. I set up a still life, just by raiding my kitchen. I thought the lemon was going to be a bit tedious but it was really exciting to figure out how to create its texture. The shadows were also really interesting; I'm always surprised by the number of different colors that I use.

Two Worlds
Let me start out by saying that I love cotton still on its stem. This piece was a still life I set up during an art class, the cotton balls were provided by my teacher and I liked them so much that she gave them to me. The reason that I titled it "Two Worlds" was that the shell is very evocative of the ocean and the cotton of the field. They are a strange mix together, although I suppose one could see the shell as that of a snail. Another part that I think is a bit silly but like anyway is that the shell looks like it has grown long crooked legs. This one is going to be included in the exhibition that is coming up so I will be posting sale information on it later.
Onion
So recently I stumbled on this really great blog Different strokes for Different folks where a picture is posted and different artists post their interpretations. This one is mine. Doing this piece made me realize how much I like painting with other people and seeing through their eyes.
I also may have a one woman show up soon, but this is still in the works (I will keep you posted). Unfortunately this also means that I am scrambling to finish up a few pieces and my posting will/is getting spotty. But I will have new and exciting things to share. It is also important to note that some of my paintings are temporarily not available for sale online.

The Geese
This painting was challenging, mostly because of the paper that I used. It just seemed to absorb water like mad. Nevertheless the interesting subject pulled me through. I know a lot of people that are terrified of geese because they are rather grumpy animals, but for the most part I find it all show. Perhaps this confidence comes from years of hand feeding them as a child and delivering prompt, though not damaging (I hope) kicks to an over aggressive gander.

Cup of Coffee
This is a copy of Paxton using watercolors instead of oils. One of my favorite features about this piece is that you can't really tell if the sun is dawning or setting. I also like what happened to the color on the wall behind the figure, it appears as if the light is flooding the room as water would.

The Fish
Welcome to my art journal! I suppose this is an attempt to document my work and to share it with others. I have painted all of my life, and now that I'm done with my undergraduate work I am taking a year off to paint full time. "The Fish" was done this past March. It was shown in the Mitchell art Gallery in Annapolis and won the Moran Prize. This particular piece just seemed to flow, the color as well as the subject were both appealing as well as challenging. It was, strangely enough, painted in my cramped dorm room and finished at some early hour of the morning.
