The crab apples that line my driveway are in full swing, the deer come in the evenings and early mornings to nibble at them. They fall on our cars with little thuds and get smashed under foot, leaving orange, then scarlet and then brown marks all over. Bitter things they are just for jam and possibly (I've heard) cider.
